NYC Marathon Canceled…

My heart hurts. I have so many mixed emotions about this…

I know why this has been canceled. I completely understand, but those that are now very pleased with themselves for getting it canceled will never know the work I (and 45,000 other people) put into this marathon. The days during training when I wanted to give up but kept pushing myself. The injuries. And its really been a 3 year struggle all leading up to this one day and now its gone and I don’t really know how to feel, but I know it sucks.

My heart has gone out to everyone affected by this devastating storm. I have opened my home to people who needed a meal, a shower, laundry, a charge, the internet. I’ve donated money to relief efforts. I’ve signed up with NYC Service and the Red Cross in order to volunteer. Chad and I were preparing to go down to the Jersey Shore on Saturday to volunteer and bring supplies to shelters (even though I knew I should be resting before the race Sunday). And we continue to seek out ways that we can help ease the pain of those in need.

A close friend who has been without power here in the city and also was supposed to run on Sunday is crushed. She’s spent this past week bouncing from friend’s apartments, to banks, to coffee shops and Sunday was going to be her first day of something normal. Something to forget about everything that has happened, and I know she is even more devastated than I am.

If you’ve never run a marathon, if you’ve never even run 5 miles, you have no idea the mental strength it takes to do something like it. After about 6 miles its no longer about physical strength or endurance, its about who you are as a person and having the will power to keep going. My mind was ready to accomplish something huge on Sunday, and a part of me feels as though its been ripped away.

But to make myself perfectly clear, this is not a complaint that it has been canceled, I am merely expressing my feelings. Again, I understand why. But really, did it need “outrage?” And did it need to be such a victory for people that will never run it in their lives? I am 100% positive that the initial decision to still have the marathon was not one that was arrived at easily. The marathon brings in millions of dollars of revenue to to the city that could then have been funneled back into the city for relief efforts. So before you jump for joy and feel that you have won, think about what we also have lost…

If you can’t say something nice…

I’m always blown away when someone chooses to be snarky and disrespectful to other people for no reason.  Is it jealousy? Loneliness? Low self-esteem?  And then if that’s truly the case, we are told to feel bad for these people, but really??  This person just tried to ruin my day, and I have to feel bad for him?

Today I had a really good day with some amazing people: Photographer Randyll Wendyl, Make-up artist Daniela Rodriguez, Videographer Lisa Marie Stanley, and Model/Friend Jon Rentler, and I posted about it on my FB page.  Keep an eye out for these pics because this team was unbelievable and the shots are going to look amazing - I can’t wait to see them.  Even my kitty Rico got in on the action.

I hope you’re excited to see the shots too.  I promise that I really had nothing to do with why they will look amazing, but I hope that I look good in them.  And I hope you will say something nice when you see them ‘cause as Thumper said, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say it at all…”

The plight of an indie artist…

This was a comment I posted on my own fb status update which read “Friends…I have a show Friday…”:

This status update should be read with an air of exhaustion. Unless you are an indie musician (or any indie/underground artist) you really have no idea what goes into booking shows, promoting shows, playing shows (and that’s only about 10% of what indie artists are expected to do) …it can be overwhelming and exhausting.

You don’t want to bombard people with info, but the reality is you have to. Promoters breath down your neck to bring people out, but you can never really predict what people will do no matter how much you push/promote, especially when only about 10 or 15% of people are paying attention to the things you say.
So your nerves are shot
for the week(s) leading up to your show wondering if people will come out, and you either get to impress a venue or disappoint a venue until the moment you step on stage and it all goes away and you get to do what you love.

I wouldn’t trade the dream I’ve chosen to pursue for anything, and in a way I sort of thrive on the challenge, but its not easy, so when you get an update from me or a message from me please don’t get annoyed and yell at me in ALL CAPS. Before you react, take a breath and remember that I’m just doing the best I can, and doing what is expected of me as an indie artist. If you truly don’t want my updates, unsubscribe from my email, delete me as your fb friend, or change your privacy settings so you never see another posting from me, but please know that getting annoyed with me and letting me know you are annoyed only makes my job even harder because now I have to think about you and what makes your life easier which I really don’t have the time or energy for.

I am one person trying to get the word out to many, a task which most people wouldn’t want, but one that I take on gladly while at the same time wishing I could just be ok with a normal job where I don’t have to worry about fans and shows and songs and money, etc.

Thank you so much to everyone that supports me everyday. I really could not do this without you. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Sorry for unloading, but hopefully a few people will read this and think twice about reacting to me just trying to do what would be considered in the music industry to be my job…
